The Evolution of Our Logo

A company’s logo can say a lot about the business it represents. If it’s a good one it may tell you about the products sold, about its history, or about the services offered. Some logos are just clever abbreviations of the first letters of the company, but often don’t reveal what the company is all about. When we began developing our first logo, I wanted one that that felt old, historic and earthy but one that had all our letters in it. I ran across an interesting logo from a nursery out west and I really liked it. I began working on our version, and came up with various ideas, but still wasn’t sure how to put it all together. I called my brother-in-law, Jeff Hendren who owns Prototype Graphics, a graphic design business in Lexington, and he helped me with the first incarnation of the Springhouse Gardens logo. On a whim he stuck in the little mallard duck flying over the “I” in Springhouse not thinking I would like it. I loved it, and the little dark wing duck has been flying over our spring ever since. We’ve had a couple logo revisions over the years in which the duck gained some weight and changed into a goose, but hey, we’re adaptable!

In the Spring of 2007 we called on Jeff again to help us bring a fresh look to our logo. We wanted to have the feel of a classic Kentucky landscape with an old limestone springhouse, plank fences, rolling hills and even a couple of horses. The tree in the center of the scene is a rugged Kentucky Coffee Tree, a common tree on farms in the Inner Bluegrass and the clusters of evergreens represent Eastern Red Cedars which are also native to Kentucky. The daffodils pay homage to one of the few ornamental plants that we found when we bought the former tobacco farm and few plants say “Welcome to Spring” as well as these cheery harbingers do.

We hope that the newest logo conveys our love of Kentucky and presents a glimpse into what you might find when you come and visit. Some day maybe we’ll even be able to build a real springhouse that will become part of our idyllic garden setting we’ve tried so hard to create.
